Yami Bakura Plushie by HetemSenar Yami Bakura Plushie by HetemSenar
Yep. Bakura again.

And I know he has a freakin big ass Millenium Ring. However that's about as small as I could make it. Any smaller and the cloth would keep fraying. T_T But I hope it's cute anyways.. Perhaps the fact that it's so oversized makes it more cute, yes? ^^ Yes? ..No? All well.. lol

(sorry for bad camera quality.)

I do take plushie commissions. If you're interested, feel free to send me a note. You can also view my commission info page here. :)

I don't have the time right now to make more tutorials, however I can point you towards some awesome people who've already made some. The techniques they use are very similar to what I do.

Body: [link]
Head: [link]
Cute hands/feet (I just recently picked this technique up): [link]
Eyes/face: [link]
Hair (hot glue with felt): [link]
(Or my messy hair tut I made a while ago, where I sew with fleece: [link] )

As for the clothes, I just use people clothes as an example to make the plushie clothes. Be sure to make patterns of everything, in case you want to make more in the future or just to help keep yourself on track. If you're unsure, you can just use felt to make the clothes with, that way you don't have to bother with hem the edges.

Hope that helped. :)

I'm not currently doing commissions, and don't estimate openning them up again until after Christmas at least. The base price for this plushie is $50. Shipping costs, depending on where you live, vary.

how do you make the ring
Reply
:iconhetemsenar:
HetemSenar Featured By Owner Mar 20, 2012  Hobbyist General Artist
With a lot of pain and toil. :'D
Sewing two stuffed halves of the ring together, then making all the trianglular shaped ones and sewing them on. After that everything is easy, just hotgluing the shiny string stuff on. But due to how small it is, the cloth would keep fraying on me if I wasn't careful.

I'm making one myself and I was just wondering...
How did you do the stripes on the shirt? Did you sew blue stripes to white fabric or did you paint them on?

Thanks ^-^

Well, for this older one I had to sew blue fabric on for the stripes (making sure to tuck in the fabric edges so it wouldn't fray later). Though I no longer do that now, since I happened across some fabric that had blue stripes already on them of the right size. But if you can't find any patterned fabric like that, like I said, it's still do-able.
Though I'd suggest not painting the stripes on. Just seems to me like it wouldn't look quite right..

Hm, let's see.
Making the hair look layered is much more interesting than just having it flat. And what material are you thinking of using for the skin? I see some people making it out of a fleece kind of cloth, but if you want to paint a face on then it ends up looking kind of glopy. So I just use a smooth, normal kind of cloth for the skin.

Beyond that I'm not really sure what to say. Are you needing help in any specific area?

That makes sense.I had thought of using fleece for the whole thing, but i hadn't remembered that the paint would be glopy.

The thing I really need help with is making the body and clothes and head.

Well then, for the hair at least you can look at my tutorial I made a while ago here: [link]
As for the head shape itself, try to make it sort of egg shaped. I have mine in two pieces and sew them along the sides of the face. I make the end openning at the top of the head, you know the opening in which you stuff the fluff into right before sewing that closed. It’s good to have that at the top of the head, so that all the rest of the head going down to the chin can be sewn on the inside then turned inside out before adding the fluff. The opening at the top can be sewn from the outside, it won’t matter that the seams are showing, since all of that area will be covered with the fleece for the hair later on. (Actually I use either fleece or felt for the hair of my plushies. Either one is good.) I only paint the face on after the head is made, that way it’s much easier to tell the distances.

As for an in general guide to the shapes/sizes of the pieces of cloth for your head, body, and clothes, that all kind of comes from trial and error. I’m not really sure exactly what plushie style your going to be doing, there are a few different kinds. Study whatever style you want to do, then make patterns based off your speculation (I make the patterns out of normal paper.) Get an unused cloth that you wont care about, cut in out in the patterns and test sew it to see if it turns out how you want. Make alterations based on the result.

As for the patterns of clothing themselves, that as easy as pie. :) Just get a shirt, coat, or whatever and study it inside out. How it’s put together, the shape of the individual pieces, ect. Then try to make a miniature copy that will fit the body. (It’s important to already have the body made at this point of course.) Just remember one important thing: the seams! When sewing them together always fold them over a couple times or so to hide the rough edge of cloth where you cut it with the scissors. With people clothes I know they do some kind of techinique with the sewing machine that covers the edges with some elaborate thread design that prevent the edge from fraying. If you have this technology in your possession, more power to you. If not, fold the edges. Believe me, with much use, the cloth will fray a lot over time if this isn’t done, and it’s not a pretty sight at all. Besides, doing this will help strengthen the cloth anyways.

You can choose to do this when sewing the body too, depending of the thickness/strength of that cloth. You don’t really have to though, since you’ll turn the body inside out anyways, and the seam will be safely inside with the fluff. I usually do the torso/arms separately from the legs/feet and only connect them at the end, after they’ve been turned inside out and already stuffed. Furthermore, I sort of cheat. If your character has bare legs, like Thief Bakura, of course you have to do the legs like that. But with Yami Bakura he has pants, so I don’t bother making legs and pants separate, I just used the pants cloth for the whole thing then sewed the feet onto it. I know you always want to make a project the best and most awesome you can, but at least in my case, there’s often a limit to the time or patience you can put in overall, so shortcuts here and there are just fine, as long as the overall project still looks fine. For the body, I also do all the parts in two pieces, sewn along the sides.

You said you were making Yami Bakura, right? For his striped shirt I have already striped cloth, so I don’t have to make the individual stripes. I highly recommend that if you can find some, otherwise it will be quite a pain, though still possible of course.
As for painting the face, do you have experience with traditional paints? If not, it’s just fine. I didn’t have any experience with them before I started with plushies. I use shiny cloth paint. I find this much better than acrylic like paint; it’s more attractive and it will not chip off. Only drawback is that it drys quickly, so sometimes you have to work fast. Just remember to add many layers to each colour or whatever. I add all the black lines/pupils after all the colours are done. A steady hand really helps with the lines; if not, I can also recommend black cloth markers to you, particularly for the mouth and stuff.

Um..is this helping at all or am I just boring you? xD
